Just noticed when I was doing a look up for Ariels that Bath BMD have started adding mother's maiden name to some earlier birth records - very useful.

Mothers Maiden Names were automatically added after Sept 1911 .... is this when Bath records start adding ........ or have they been really generous and started adding earlier than that ? Elaine ;-))

Elaine they are adding them from 1837. I have already had to change several year of birth guessed from the census. They also tell you which register they are on.e.g. Walcott. It has confirmed my grandparents were second cousins so everyone should appear twice on my tree.

You LUCKY peeps you !! make the most of it ! .... I can only assume that they have access to the origional entries rather than the indexes then ! WOW... Think I'll move down to Bath then :-) Oh ... that wouldn't really help me would it .. since my Ancestors are in Surrey and Lancashire .. Oh well, I'm pleased for you ! Elaine ;-))

The addition of mothers maiden name in 1911 refers to GRO indexes. Bath BMD is part of the UKBMD setup which are ALL indexing from the original local records from which GRO are copied (often wrongly) . I seem to recall that they could only include certain things which were on the local indexes. If this applies to all the others it will be a dream. Bob

spouces names are on the marriage index to. I had loads of fun looking up siblings on Baths site (all born in north Somerset), loved it as I could be sure I had the right people.

I've also had lots of fun - so much so, hubby's tea is going to be late - oops! I only wish my whole tree was from Bath, but I suppose that's me being greedy! Thanks for letting us know Helen

I have the index disck for Bath marriages from about 1750 if you need anything looked up. My husband and daughter are watching the football so they have not noticed there's no tea. It is very useful to know how many families there are with the same name.

Annie, Thank you so much for letting us know about this added information this is wonderful news. I have just had a look and been able to confirm that my gggrandmother gave birth to two sons who both died soon after birth, how sad. I have taken up your offer regarding the 1750 files and sent you a PM, hope you do not mind. Thanks once again. Elizabeth

Isle of Wight BMD has mother's maiden name on a lot of entries too, I think it is listed as 'other surnames' or something. Kate.

The biggest thank you is for looking up my Ariels.

I think all the local UKBMD sites are doing that - Staffs has been doing it for a while.

Thanks for that Christine, the deaths will be really useful. Do you find family history makes you a touch callous?

Showing my ignorance - does this mean that Ancestry FreeBMD searches with the second surname are possible? Or are they limited to the 1911 GRO start date? What am I missing out on?
