Saving Web Addresses

I am a bit of a novice with the computer, self taught. People often post useful website addresses and I write them down,or in the case of Deb the leg bone... print them off (25 pages!) I notice many people say they will save or bookmark them. How to do this? I am swamped with bits of paper and notebooks. Most of the addresses, I cant remember what they are for. Do I need to create a special file for these addresses? What is a bookmark? Sorry If I seem a bit of an idiot. I am on AOL and WindowsXP. Regards Sylvia.

Hello Sylvia When saving web addresses (once you have logged in to that site) all you do is go to the top of your page where it says 'Favourites' and click on the 'Add to Favourites' it will then be automatically added to you favourites list. To see these listings click on the big yellow star which says 'Favourites'. A new 'list' will open on the left hand side of your screen. This will hold all your 'favourite' websites. Once you have your list on the left hand side there is a little button which says + add to favourites - if you click on this (when the website is open/loaded) it will automatically add the website to your list. You can organise your list however you wish and even add folders to put them into categories if you so wish. Hope this helps Snowdrops

Thank you Snowdrop and Jen, it`s quite simple when you know how!! AOL seem to have been saving a lot of favourite sites for me without me realising! I will spend a free morning,or day, clearing the backlog of paperwork from desk. What a relief! Thanks again,Sylvia.

Another way of saving web addresses is to use del.icio.us. Open a free account at http://del.icio.us and not only can you tag pages you want to revisit very easily, but also you can search through the tags of other people. This is a good way of finding genealogical links. You can also use the links and tags on any PC without having to copy bookmark files. I have found it very useful.

Hi Sylvia I would call myself computer-literate, having used one for many years now, but I have a total blank when it comes to using 'My Favourites' lol! Right up until last week, I was just writing them down in a notebook (don't any of you dare laugh at me!). Then a really helpful man on this board (I think he's Paul Grubb but forgive me if that's the wrong one) mentioned a new thing from Google. If you go to http://labs.google(.)com ...please note there is no 'www' and remove the brackets .... scroll down a little way until you come to the Notebook. It's a great new invention whereby you can add anything you like, it literally is a notebook, and because it's web-based you can access it from wherever you are, you don't need to be at home. Hope this helps, Mandy :)
