where would i find the parish records for st gregorys roman catholic church in farnworth bolton lancs . i have tried ringing the church several times and no luck its not on the lancashire parish site would a local library have them ? its for a marriage in 1872 love linda x x

i am trying to find out where in ireland my grandfather came from i think it was galway but not sure. i was hoping on the parish record of the marriage there might be more details than on the marriage cert. love linda x x ps off to work know if anyone has any ideas that would be great love linda x x

The latest issue of 'Family History' magazine says that 'The Lancs RO holds Church of England, Roman Catholic and Nonconformist registers for the county'. The address is Lancashire Record Office, Bow Lane, Preston, PR1 2RE, open Mon Wed and Fri 9-5, Tue 9-8.30, Thur 10-5, one Sat each month 10-4. Telephone 01772 533039. If you want their email address then look at their website which is www.lancashire.gov.uk/education/record_office because GR won't allow email addresses to be posted on the message boards. Anyway, you can phone or email them to ask if they have the register for the church in question. It doesn't look as though their online list of parish registers includes Catholic ones, but that doesn't mean they don't have them! Worth asking, I would have thought. BUT I very much doubt if there will be any details of where in Ireland he came from on the church marriage certificate. Sorry! Do you have him on any censuses, and if so, does it just say 'Ireland' for his birthplace on them? Kate.

hi kate sorry its late but i have been on a late shift. on the census it says he came from ireland and on the 1881 census it says from galway ireland. i have no other clue as to where he came from. i dont know when he came into this country the firs thing i have is his marriage in 1872 in farnworth bolton lancs so i hoped that there might have been mor on the parish records ? love linda x

Linda, the thing is that the marriage certificate in the parish records should be the same as the copy you have, and so there would be no room for extra information on it really. Nor any reason why the priest would have asked for extra information, as far as I know. Have you looked for him on any other census? Kate.

hi kate, i have got him on every census from 1881 and i have his marriage and death cert and know where he was born ( i think galway ireland as stated on the 1881 ) and all his children etc.. but its where he came from. someone on here once said that the roman catholic churches put more into their records than what was on the certificate ? dont know if that is true or not i suppose i was just hoping it was love linda x x
