Where does your surname originate?

Alison, I really dont like that site. Fortunately I have a rare surname so I know where it originates - Norfolk. On their map the largest number is shown in Yorkshire. Shock horror, I look them up - there are 2 families equalling about 10 people. I mailed the creators of this map and the fact is it doesnt show most people it shows the greatest number of people of that name against the local postal district population. Hence, my 10 living in the Yorkshire moors with no one for miles show up as the greatest density. My 200 living in London dont show up at all. A total waste of public money.

My maiden name is most prolific where I live now, guess my family don't move around a lot!

The only problem with this site is that once you start playing you can't stop and don't get anything else done!!! I found it fascinating that all my surnames were from the areas where they were most popular.

Some of you may have already come across this site but I have just found it. You type in your surname and it shows you where in the country people with the same surname lived in 1881 and 1998. www.spatial-literacy.org(/)UCLnames(/)Surnames.aspx You need to remove the ( ). If it does not work please let me know as I am not very good at putting web addresses on here.
