I have an ancestor who was called in various sources both Ann & Nancy. I always assumed that Ann was her given name and Nancy was the nickname. However I have just found a parish register entry around the time of her birth for a child christened Nancy. Would you be likely to be christened Nancy as a name in its own right, but then use Ann as the nickname? In other words, could a nickname become a proper name and the proper name be the nickname? Has anyone heard of this before?

Yes, I have seen a baptism for Betty and then she is referred to as Elizabeth later on. So it could happen. Kate.

I've got several who ''upgrade'' when they get married!! So baptised as Betty, Nancy and Kate and marry as Elizabeth, Ann and Catherine! LOL Merry

Also found bp as Nanny but burial as Ann, bp Isabella but married as Tibby Jay

I had a cousin who was born and married as Fanny but had upgraded to Frances by the time she died. It happens. Names aren't set in stone. Andrew.

I have a Peggy who upgraded to Margaret, an Eliza who upgraded to Elizabeth and and a Mally who upgraded to Mary. I believe that it may have been something to do with certain vicars considering the shortened or nicknames to be 'ungodly'.
