I have an ancestor who was called in various sources both Ann & Nancy. I always assumed that Ann was her given name and Nancy was the nickname. However I have just found a parish register entry around the time of her birth for a child christened Nancy. Would you be likely to be christened Nancy as a name in its own right, but then use Ann as the nickname? In other words, could a nickname become a proper name and the proper name be the nickname? Has anyone heard of this before? |

Yes, I have seen a baptism for Betty and then she is referred to as Elizabeth later on. So it could happen. Kate. |

I had a cousin who was born and married as Fanny but had upgraded to Frances by the time she died. It happens. Names aren't set in stone. Andrew. |

I have a Peggy who upgraded to Margaret, an Eliza who upgraded to Elizabeth and and a Mally who upgraded to Mary. I believe that it may have been something to do with certain vicars considering the shortened or nicknames to be 'ungodly'. |
