I have a mystery that will have you checking the Census Entries,BMD and all the other Data you will have, over and over again, and still you won't get anywhere near to solving. This below is the Marriage Record taken from St Marks Church Shelton Staffordshire. St Marks Shelton 6th August 1854 Herbert Bevington-23 Batchelor-Collier,Wood Terrace-Father-Charles-Potter. Eliza Mountford-23 Spinster-Wood Terrace-Father-James Mountford-Potter. Witnesses-George Cooper and ? Cooper. Apparently the same Herbert Bevington marries an Alice 'Roach' at Stockton-On-Tees in 1857,for in the later Census Entries his Father Charles is staying with him.Anyone who can solve this mystery,is welcome! Regards William Russell Jones Cefn Mawr Wrexham. |

So, which bit is the mystery? Is it what happened to the first wife? Have you got the second marriage cert? Why is the name ''Roach'' in inverted commas? Merry |

So, in other words, if they didn't divorce, then he married again bigamously...yes? |

If this is Herbert with his second ''wife'' in 1861: Alice Bevington abt 1830 Leeds, Yorkshire, England Wife Byker Northumberland Alice Bevington abt 1851 Newcastle Upon Tyne Daughter Byker Northumberland Herbert Bevington abt 1833 Hanley, Staffordshire, England Head Byker Northumberland Mary Bevington abt 1859 Newcastle Upon Tyne Daughter Byker Northumberland .....then who is Alice born 1851?? Is she a child of Alice Roach using her step-father's surname? Merry |

Yes that is the right Family in 1861,I don't know about the Alice daughter aged 10 though! Regards William Russell Jones Cefn Mawr Wrexham. |

Well, I would get the second marriage cert. I expect Herbert will say he's a widower (or possibly a bachelor, if he hadn't confessed to Alice!)! Once you are more certain about Alice senr's previous surname(s), you might try and find Alice junr on the 1851 census (if she was born in time) Merry |

It states on Ancestry that Herbert Bevington married an Alice Roch in 1857,which is why I was uncertain of her Surname.I have found no Alice Roch using Soundex that would fit in 1851.My interest incidentally is that the Eliza,is the sister of my Greatx2-Grandmother Harriet Mountford who married William Cartlidge, which is another Surname to use soundex with!Of course many people would say,why bother will all this if it isn't your Direct Line. That is the trouble with genealogy you have get the full picture! Of course, it doesn't say for definite on ancestry / FreeBMD that it was Alice Roch who Herbert married: Marriages Dec 1857 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bevington Herbert Stockton 10a 114 Roch Alice Stockton 10a 114 Wait Jerimiah Stockton 10a 114 Wilson Ann Stockton 10a 114 Not on NorthEast BMD yet so I can't check there. But it does seem likely that those two married each other given the census entry. Kate. |

Yes thanks Kate,it is the only available Marriage for Herbert and Alice Bevington. Not finding the Alice in any earlier Census makes making contact with any of her Family all the more difficult. Regards William Russell Jones Cefn Mawr Wrexham |

Alice might have been married twice since 1851 and so Ro(a)ch is not the name she was going by in the last census. Merry |

Yes thanks Merry it is a possibility.I am also looking to get an angle on all this from later connections of the daughter Mary who according to the 1861 census was born in c 1859. Regards William Russell Jones Cefn Mawr Wrexham. |
