Google says Rotherhithe, Surrey Docks and Surrey Quays. Who would disagree. :-) Keith

Definitely Surrey, all my lot are from there, in fact I was born there. Rotherhithe is south of the river. Middlesex is north of the river.

Rotherhithe is still in Surrey. It's just been taken into the Greater London enclave. Simple guide about London and counties: Middlesex is north of the river and comprises much of North London (some of North London is Hertfordshire) and West London. Essex is north of the river and east of London. South of the river is Surrey and further east is Kent. Don't ask which river!!!

and if you're stuck with placenames in 1841 again, just bung whatever the placename is into the keyword box and you'll soon see where it was listed in the census. nell

Thank god Nell, just realised you were addressing, tongue in cheek, the 'which river' to Pinkella, (breathes sigh of relief that one of my heroes was kidding) Its THE RIVER, Pinkella, the life blood of London.
