Londy Are you sure that it doesnt just say chap because there wasnt enough room to write the word in full? Does that make sense? I have looked at a few old maps in my time and only ever know this as being short for chapel - but of course, I could be wrong! OC

I wonder if it could be Chapter? It could also be Chapelry........defined thus........... Status: Chapelry Identifier: Ch Description: The district attached to a chapel; a division of a large or populous parish which has its own parochial or district chapel. Geographical Level: 7 (Parish) Reg

Any thoughts about Chapelry? This is a couple of centuries later, but............. Historical Geography. In 1835 St Helens was a chapelry in the township of Windle in the parish of Prescot. Maps. View maps of St Helens and places within................. The above info from Genuki Reg

Well done Reggie, I think you're right. I was sort of imagining that this was describing a building, but if the words are not pinpointing a building then chapelry would seem correct, describing the area rather than a building. (Phew!) OC
