Thanks, I have Elizabeth born 1788 marrying Thomas Gay Ransford in Bristol. Elizabeth's baptism was 1791 (Broad Mead Baptist). Her brother Myles Ariel born 29July 1791 Bristol. Agatha Ariel born 3 Sept 1801. Jane Ariel and Ann Ariel born after 1801. I wonder if the William who is 50 could be grandfather instead of father? |

If the spirit merchant William Ariel was your Elizabeth's father, he would have been nearly 50 when she was born. You don't state the date of the marriage, but generally births followed fairly quickly after marriage with grim regularity every 18-months to 2 years thereafter. Have you found other children of this marriage? Is there an indication of occupation of father in Elizabeth's baptism records? nell |

The only way you can be sure is to find as many matching details as you can. It is never an exact science. I suppose with your name you really need to be pointed in the right direction! ;-) |

I have got my Ariel tree back to Elizabeth Ariel born 1788. Her parents were William Ariel and Elizabeth Kirkby, and they were married in St John’s Wakefield. After that all the children were born in Bristol. All the above has been checked with certs. or IGI. Now I’m trying to find if William Ariel who was a Spirit Merchant in Thorne, Yorkshire in 1829 was the same person as the one who married Elizabeth Kirkby. The Ariels in Bristol were all Brokers and Merchants, so the occupation is similar. As they have moved from Wakefield to Bristol, I’m not concerned about the distance. I have found other Ariels in Bristol in 1745. Maybe some or all went North then came back. Money was no object. The Christian names follow a pattern, with Kirkby and Eyre being common second names. I’ve searched the IGI. I can’t get to UK to search anything else. Can anyone suggest what I need to check to get a connection. Thanks. |
