Anyone know what sort of occupation this is? Found this as the occupation of 2 x gt grandfathers unmarried sister on 1881 census |

I think (someone will correct me if wrong) that it is something similar t a pension, where they have paid money in - I have a couple of them in my tree so would be interested to see the 'proper' or correct definition. |

It's not an occupation, its someone who receives an annuity. What's an annuity? It was a form of income. You (or a benevolent employer/family member) would buy one and it would give you an annual payment to live on. It was like having a pension. nell |

As women couldn't be trusted to handle their own money(!) they may well be provided with an annuity on the death of a parent or brother. It is well worth looking to see if you can find a will. |
