Thanks Brenda Sorry for not replying sooner,i just received a call from a living rellie from the Hay line,we didn't even know about each other until 30 minutes ago. The 61 details are the ones that i have.Charlotte remained with Ann in the 71 along with a child (g-daur to Ann). It looks like Charlotte abandoned the child later as i can find her in the census with other family. Just jotting down some info from the phone call,looks like Georges wife lived to over 100 years old (remarried so i couldn't find her) Glen

One thing you could do is to look at the burials in the parish registers where the two possible baptisms are to see if either of them died young so you can rule them out. Also, the baptism entries may give father's occupation, which might possibly help (though what's the betting it is 'labourer' for both?). The father's occupation is not usually transcribed onto the IGI, so you would have to look at the actual parish register. The only other thing that springs to mind at the moment is to see if his father left a will. Kate.

depends on how helpful Lincoln are, but have you tried phoning & ask if they can match not only the father (& presumably mother's first name), but also the likely address? They should only have a max of 2 years to look through. Or apply by post with a covering letter explaining what you are looking for, and see how many possibles they come back with. Last time I dealt with a local register office they didn't charge me just for looking (unlike the GRO). And don't discount a 1842 birth - could be he had a birthday later in the year, so that by the time he married he hadn't had that year's birthday. (eg birthday Sept, married in June) Also, the age on the marriage cert might be slightly out - I have a marriage cert giving the groom's age as 20 when he was actually 21. (You'd think he'd know, wouldn't you!) and another that looks like 36 when he was actually 26.

Tree searches and Hot Matches only ever match to a Chambers clan in Collingham,nothing on World Family Tree,serious lack of knowledge from living family (this one is my birth tree,so i am completely blind). I haven't been able to link the Collingham family to the Lincoln family,George and his five sibs are a major pain,and my direct line as well!!! Knowing my luck none of them will have been registered,and i have 3 pre 1837 Parish Register entries for John Chambers marriage to an Ann/Anne in Lincoln for what i suspect is the right time. Glen

I know this sounds like cheating, but with my lot it was the only way. You may have already tried. Check on the GR search for names and dates, and see if you get the same person with that family. Just check their membership number is the same each time. I've done it twice and it's worked. It might just give you some idea or at least get rid of a couple. Good Luck. PS. Hi Merry There is only one other post 1837 sibling i know of,and she could be one of three refs for the year she always has in the census. Again two IGI refs with the right name for parents(John and Ann or John and Anne) The rest of the sibs are pre 1837. I only have a wedding cert to confirm the father,but found a match for father,son and sister (the landlords wife) in the 51 and traced them back to the 41. Glen

Did any of his siblings have a less common name? If so, you might find an unambiguous ref for their birth - their cert would then give you the mother's maiden name, which you could use as a checking point to get your George's birth. Richard

My suggestion not much help then! Looks as though you may have to get the certs one by one until the address matches the 1841 - assuming they didn't move!! Hopefully someone will come up with a better idea. Good luck Roger

The area in Lincoln is also covered by four churches all within a stones throw of the residence,St Michael on the Mount,St Swithin,St Benedict(?) and a couple near the castle/cathedral. Glen

The family always appear in Lincoln. The 61 census the kids are recorded as births by parish,in Georges case St Michael,but the St Michael IGI ref has different parents altogether and christening and death both in 1842 so i'm discounting that one. in the 51 births recorded as Lincoln (city),and i have all the Lincoln birth refs for 1840 to 1845. The only clue that i have is his sister married a chap and my George lodged with them in 1881 and this chap is a witness to the marriage. Glen

Could you find parents on 1841 census and narrow down birth registrations by registration district based on their 1841 residence?

George Chambers (again) 1851 census abt 1842 1861 census abt 1842 1881 census abt 1841 1891 census abt 1842 1885 wedding cert gives age as 42 so that would make him born 1843. Father is named as John Chambers on w/c,and 51 and 61 result mathches with father,mother and siblings. Four possibe ref numbers and IGI has two possible matches with same name for Father and variant of mothers spelling. Help. Glen
