consumption is a bit of a loose term, just meaning wasting away of the body, but it was often used to describe pulmonary (ie affecting the lungs) tuberculosis which was extremely common before antibiotics. nell

Thank you Merry, Nell and Anne. I will check into consumption. (Just out of curiosity now, since I don't really know much about it.) Anne, I have a few 'sad' deaths, but nothing like that. You're right, the poor family. :(

I had two brothers of my g grandfather buried on the same day. One aged 20 the other aged 2. I assumed an illness but NO! One of them fell from a train and died in hospital three days afterwards and the other died two days later from convulsions. My poor gg grandparents - what they went through. Anne

Lisa I know I recently went through the burial register for a densely populated area of London. Nearly all the adult deaths were attributed to consumption and nearly all the infant deaths to convulsions. But since no doctor was required at that time to certify death, these are really estimates. I often think of the page often reproduced, showing deaths in the 1660s of the plague. Other causes were 'teeth', 'rising of the lights [lungs]' and other - to us - incomprehensible things. nell

Consumption was a common cause of death and people living in the same house often succumbed one after the other.....but you are never going to know! Merry

Hi Nell. I actually have a copy of the parish burial page and there aren't causes listed. :( Perhaps since it happened even more frequently and closer dates in your families, this is just a coincidence. Thank you for your reply. :)

I've several instances of married couples dying within a short space (a month or less) than eachother. But the causes on the death certs weren't the same. nell

In March and May of 1811, two of my ancestors died. (They would have been 'in-laws' had they lived another 5 years when their children were married.) One was 55, the other was 38 years old. Can't find anything about any illnesses in their area - now wondering if others have similar events in their family trees?
