Can someone tell me what their role is in all of this - are they groups of local people with interest in family history of their own specific geographical areas? I'm after one that covers the Widnes area of what was then Lancashire - does anyone know their address / contact details. Any info greatfully received Cheers Jenx

Try Googling Lancashire FHS. They are very good resources, usually staffed by volunteers, and the membership fees are generally inexpensive.

They are local groups interested in family history -but their family may not necessarily the same area the group is in. Many fhs have made transcripts, indexes etc of genealogical sources in their area - you can see these on payperview on www.familyhistoryonline*com - check the county database to see if the town/parish and period you want are covered. I've got a list of all the marriages - fairly unusual surname - for a specific county from an fhs, including all the witnesses with that surname, for about £2.00. nell

Most societies have a small library of books and C.D.s for sale and usually man a stall at the local history fair. Bristol has south gloucestershire burials on line. They often have volunteers willing to do look-ups for a small fee. They will also have a list of names being researched by their own members. I used to belong to the Bristol one before the days of the internet. I now belong to a local history society which covers a wider range of interests.

I sent for a specific church burial list off one once. It was a church I knew my g-grandparents went to. I received a booklet (cost about £2) with list of people buried in churchyard, it had grave number next to name with a little map showing the grave numbers. Also stated what gravestone was made of which way it was facing, and what was inscribed on the grave. Excellent value if you can't get to church easily. Yvonne
