Can anyone help me find a family on the 1901 census please? My ancestor is Louisa Channing b1867. I have her on the 1871 and 1881 censuses, and by the 1891 census she is married to William Eastlick, with two children as follows: Amelia Eastlick abt 1889 Plymouth, Devon, England Daughter Charles Devon Louisa Eastlick abt 1868 Plymouth, Devon, England Wife Charles Devon Susan Eastlick abt 1890 Plymouth, Devon, England Daughter Charles Devon William Eastlick abt 1869 Newlyn E., Cornwall, England Head Charles Devon I have found their marriage, and the births of both daughters, and the name is Eastlick each time. There are also two Eastlick children born in the right area a few years after the girls, but obviously these might not be mine. I can’t find any of them on the 1901 census, not even the two latest children. I’ve tried ranked searches and Soundex, and every possible variation on spelling of Eastlick (Estlick, Eastlake, etc) but they seem to have vanished. Many thanks, Mandy :) |

Hi Mandy, The easiest thing is to search by first name only and where born. I chose Susan and found them. Rose |

Thank you SO much Paul, Jess and Nell. I can't believe it (think it's called Sod's Law) - I very rarely ask for help with finding families on the census because I plod on and on until I find them or find a clue somewhere. The very time I ask for help and it's blooming obvious!! Now please can you tell me how to do these wildcard searches on Ancestry? I was just typing in any variation I could think of. Mega thanks! Mandy :) |

i didnt use any wild cards either i chose amelia, born Devon - cos so many tweak their birthplace- and the year +/-1 didn't enter a surname at all |

Hi Mandy Your welcome. I found them by using a wild card; Try Firstname = Ame* Last Name = East* Birth Year =1889 +-1 Parish or Place = Plymouth. And you will soon flush them out. HTH ... Paul |

I just can't believe that I've been on GR well over two years and had Ancestry for nearly all that time, and still it didn't occur to me to try searching without the surname! I can't even say I'm having a senior moment, because it's lasted too long lol!! Thanks again everyone, I really appreciate your help. Mandy :) |
