Yes Glen I have her birth, no problem finding her. There just seems to be so much mystery surrounding my grandad, that I am determined to crack it no matter what, tho I would have to hold a seance lol. Just questioned this because it is different to all the others i have. so was clutching at straws hoping it would throw out some vital clue! I think you will find it is a certificate proving his age when he was old enough to get a job, we have one for my husbands grandmother and it was issued when she was 16 so she could get a job, she was born in 1909. On the back of the certificate it says in large letters Factory & Workshop Act 1901. Georgina.

It sounds like he applied for it when he left school and started work at age 14 - he would need it for National Insurance purposes. Nowadays every child is issued with an NI number automatically when they are 16, but I think I am right in saying that back then you only got an NI number when you started work. Tina

Have you got a bmd ref for his birth at about the right time. My g/m was never registered and had to obtain special certs for her marriage and a death cert issued for her first husband is a 'special'.Supplied for the purposes of widows pension only and for no other purpose. Despite trawling for her birth ref nothing appears in the index,she was born illegitimate in London and raised by relations in Lincolnshire.When she came to remarry it took months to prove who she was and whether she would be able to marry. My grandfather was born in 1923, this cert was applid for 16 aug 1937. Could I find out who wanted the copy? (as my grandad would be what 13?) If his mother applied for this (there is no father listed on it) what would her circumstances be, anyone know? Thanks

I have a copy of my grandfathers birth cert, at the top it says ... Supplied at the special fee of 6d, applicable in certain statutory cases. Then under that it says... This certificate is issued for the purposes of unemployment insurances acts and for no other use or purposes whatever. More info...
