Hi, I am trying to trace the marriage of my great grandmother's sister - Nellie Louise Guilford born c1882 New Cross London. I have found a record of a marriage for Jun qtr 1906 Camberwell district 1d 1503. I thought that she married a Mr Hesford, however when I look under that name for the same quarter there's nothing there. Does anyone know an easy way to find out the husband's name, without going to the expense of a certificate? I've tried the partial index & it's not listed. I've also tried FreeBMD & even the IGI - not on there either. Thank you for your help! Rachelxx |

did you try the images of the BMD's on ancestry? or if anyone has a couple of sapre credits for family relatives they might be able to have a look for you (1866 - 1920 is fully transcribed on that site) I'm sure the site let's you cross reference now. |

As Georgina has pointed out, her husband was either called Gaiger or Handley. After about 1912 the mother's maiden name was given in the birth indexes. So you could look for Gaiger or Handley births and see if any of them gave Guilford as the mother's maiden name. With fairly rare names like these that would be very good evidence, especially if they were registered in Camberwell or nearby. This all assumes that they had any children after 1912, of course. Andrew. |

Thank you both for your time & help. Georgina - where did you find the couples listed? I tried the partial marriage index on Ancestry & nothing came up. Lunar - I've seen the image, unfortuantely there doesn't appear a way to see the husband's details. I had a feeling that there was a website that could do this, I just couldn't remember the name! Hopefully someone has got some spare credits...... |

Another point worth making - you said you thought Nellie Louise Guilford married a Mr Hesford, this might be her second marriage. It's worth checking if there's a marriage between a Mr Hesford and either Nellie Louise Gaiger or Nellie Louise Handley. This might give another clue as to who she married even if you can't find any children from the first marriage. The second marriage should have been indexed under 'Guilford' as well as 'Handley/Gaiger' but this didn't always happen. Andrew. |

Thank you for your replies Valerie & Andrew. Valerie - I could only find a record of the marriage in the images not the transcriptions unfortunately. Andrew - thats a good point, hadn't thought of that! Thank you everyone for your help tonight - off to bed now! |
