I've just been reading Gypsy Joe's thread & wills are mentioned as a good resource. My question is where do you start? I don't have a clue about searching for wills. Are there any databases on line? I'm in France. Does it work like GRO?..... Sarah :-) |

If you scroll down the GR homepage you will find Getting Started. click on that, there's a section on Wills. Finding them depends on which years you are looking - pre-1858 there are some searchable on the National Archives website. nell |

The National Archives website is really useful. I have found several Wills on there for my rellies, some dating from the early 1700's. You can download them for £3.50 each. The information in them is fascinating and by working through the relationships stated on a couple of wills, I managed to work out who the parents were of a rellie who had been bugging me for ages. |

Try also County websites - I found most of mine there, Cheshire in particular. I also found two on A2A. Both are in private hands and I havent been able to get hold of them - yet! One is deposited with a Solicitor in Salisbury, who wants £100 to get it out of storage. Olde Crone |
