John Symes, Born 1825, North Curry, Somerset . 1841 –as SIMS, in North Curry, with parents John & Mary. (age given as 12) 1851 – working as a baker in North Curry. (with Anthony Poundsberry and his family) He married Charlotte Foster in North Curry in July 1851, Charlotte was born in 1830 in North Curry. They had a son Henry John born Jan 1852 in North Curry (Taunton Registration district) I have gone through all the census pages for North Curry & they don’t appear to be there in 1861. The next child I am aware of, Louisa, was born in London in 1863 (St George Hanover Sq) 1871 – Living St Giles in the Fields, London. With wife Charlotte & children Henry J (1852) and Elizabeth (b. 1865 St George, London). He is a Cellarman, wine warehouse. 1881 – Living in North Curry. With wife Charlotte, daughter Elizabeth and mother Mary Burt. He is a pauper. He died in 1890. Charlotte & Louisa are in North Curry in 1891, Elizabeth is married. I think by 1861 he is lost in the great metropolis somewhere, and more likely than not the name is mistranscribed. Any geniuses out there sniff him out please?

What was his occupation ? ... any chance they could have travelled to Wales, Scotland, Ireland or further a field for 1861 census night ? Have done a quick check for Charlotte b 1830 +/- 2 years ... but only result I got in England was Charlotte Trent b North Curry, Somerset ... she's 30 and unmarried... Elaine ;-) Sorry .. just read ... he was a cellarman .....wine warehouse ... maybe he was elsewhere buying stock ??

Huge swaths of London are missing from the 1861 census...... If you need to see the list, search for ''Is this why you'' in the search box on this tips board. Merry

In 1851 he is a baker. Elizabeth's marriage cert also gives his occupation as baker. In 1881 he is a pauper, so I guess in 1861 he could be doing anything! If he's away somewhere, where's the family? I can't find any likely candidates anywhere. (By the way, there IS another John Symes b. 1825 North Curry, he is married to a Sarah - in 1861 they are in Taunton. This is definitely a separate family.)

Thanks Merry, I'll check that out. (Though not knowing London very well I still might not know!)
