Can anyone make out the occupation of this man please, I need to know if what he does has anything to do with watch making or jewellery making as that would help me know if it is my chap: 1841 Census William Edwards b c1811 Middlesex, living in Hammersmith with wife Sarah. It looks as if it is Drawing ??? I am trying to trace him and Sarah because I can't find their marriage, either of their births (supposedly at St. Lukes, which I suppose is Finsbury) or much else about them. Any help out there from you great people? Many thanks Maggie.

It does look like drawing but I don't think it is. I wonder is if says draining? There is also the possibility that it ends with letter Y not G Not sure if this helps or not. Off to bed now.

Hi A Drawer made wire by drawing the metal through a die (so that could be your tie to jewellery?) it was also the name given to someone who pulled the coal up the mineshaft. Jan

Thanks Jools and Jan for looking. It IS very hard to read. I have been all day looking at all the Williams and Sarahs and this seems to be the closest to match what I had (from the birth certificate of one of their daughters). I will take your suggestions and see what I can find. Many thanks.

The last letter does look like a y but if you look at some of the words in the next column ie daughter and lodger the last letter is probably a g. There is also a capital letter after the drawing which looks like an M or W but looks like neither of the M's or W's on the page. Not sure if I'm helping. Toni

It says 'Drawing M'. I guessed at drawing master, and sure enough, in 1851 he's a professor of drawing.

THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR LOOKING! Mary you must have great eyesight!! Thanks for the 1851 check, which now tells me that this William and Sarah are not mine after all. I have found mine on 1851, and he is a watchmaker (and I know he was a jeweller from his daughter's marriage cert.) I still can't find mine on the 1841!! So many Williams, so little time! LOL Thanks again to all. Maggie
