Thanks to you all - looking forward to it - think it's quite a common Scottish name but you've given me quite a few options! Debby

Hi Debbie Its 1 credit to look at an index and 5 credits to view the image on scotlandspeople, excepr for the 1881 census, this is only 1 credit to view the image as they dont have digital images of originals just transcriptions. also when you get before 1875, try using the scottish IGI at www.scotsorigins(.)com as this is a free site and can save on credits with scotlands people. Freecen has some census returns but its not yet complete so some counties are missing. www.censusfinder(.)com also has some free census records, this site also has a lot of really useful links. Good Luck with you research! Debbie

Hi Debby, I've found Scotlandspeople a superb, comprehensive site though it does become a bit expensive if you are trying to track through many possibles. You can access data online rather than waiting weeks for a certificate but still send for transcripts should you need it. You can sometimes save a few credits by using the site in conjunction with familysearch.org and freecen. Though not complete, freecen has some pretty good coverage for some areas of Scotland. I've been able to discount matches on freecen occasionally rather than having to use (?5) credits to view an image. Good luck and let us know if you need any more help :-) Jenny

There are few sites available for Scotland but I think scotlandspeople is the most comprehensive. They have:- CENSUS » 1841 » 1851 » 1861 » 1871 » 1881 » 1891 » 1901 Statutory Registers (BMD registers) » Births 1855-1905 » Marriages 1855-1930 » Deaths 1855-1955 Old Parish Registers » Births & Baptisms 1553-1854 » Banns & Marriages 1553-1854 Wills & Testaments » Free Index Search 1513-1901

Hi Am trying to find some family for my sister in laws husband and his maternal side are all from Scotland - most of them still live there. Anyway are there any free sites or is the Scotlandpeople site the best?. Also, when it says £6 for 30 images - does that mean I can look at 30 census images and if so, have they got 1841-1901? Thanks Debby
