I have John Lawton: b 1843 regQ2 Warrington. died regQ4 1906 Prescot and Jane Hughes died regQ1 1879 Prescot age 38 - i cannot find her birth as too many JH , and I also now find she was possibly from flintshire (1871 Census), where i had always assumed she was from theprescot/merseyside area. Their first surviving child was b 1867 William Lawton and i have him regQ3 warrington. I'm trying to trace their marriage (John&Jane) but I dontknow where to look/what reference ranges/criteria etc to use. Any advice welcome Cheers Jen

I would start looking from when She was 12 and he was 14 (the age at which they could marry) and keep looking well bast the birth of the children. I have relatives that married when the eldest child was about 21.

Have you been looking on the FreeBMD database? there are still gaps, even though they've got a huge amount transcribed. Ancestry has the index images sort-of indexed (by first & last names on the page) available - free, I think. Christine

If she did come from Flintshire there are five possibles transcribed on N Wales BMD so far... Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Reference North Wales Birth indexes for the years: 1840 HUGHES Jane Holywell Flintshire HOL/03/18 HUGHES Jane Holywell Flintshire HOL/03/5 HUGHES Jane Whitford Flintshire WHIT/02/3 North Wales Birth indexes for the years: 1841 HUGHES Jane Mold Flintshire MOLD/03/62 HUGHES Jane Whitford Flintshire WHIT/02/28 I can see your dilemma - it gets expensive to buy five certs just on the off-chance, when it could be that none of them is the right one.
