.......hubby's grandad was born 18.06.1901 (typical). We have no other info about parents. Is the only way to get back any further by ordering his birth cert?.............................when did mothers maiden name go onto birth indexes?.........................I've just got his name and birth date from m-in law tonight and am keen to get going on the family tree, and now fear I will have to wait weeks for the birth cert to arrive from records office!! Thanks........ |

Look for his birth in the June or Sept quarter of 1901. With any luck it shouldn't be too difficult to find the right one. Mother's maiden name not in index till 1911. The birth cert will take as long as it takes (last time I ordered it was 3 weeks, but I think they are speeding up). Birth cert will give an address plus both parents' names and father's occupation which will make it easier to ensure you have the right people on 1901 census. nell |

Oh and grandfather's father's name and occupation should also be on grandfather's marriage cert. |

Did he have any older brothers/sisters? Do you know where he was born? Does your mum in law have any family photos with some names on the back perhaps, so you could use your powers of deduction to pass the time while waiting for the cert? Great if youre proved right but dont base your tree on guesstimates though! Jen |

Thanks everyone - will order cert now! Other halfs tree is proving a nuisance already! Typical ! I must have been lucky with mine as had all confirmed info prior to 1901 with no problems! |

So, maybe this is the time to get a divorce and a replacement hubby, before you spend too much money????? Well worth it in the long run.....mine is half Spanish and has cost a fortune for some info on that side of his tree. Should have checked him out more when we met!! Merry |

Once you have a name and address-use trade directories and electoral roles from the area they lived -contact the relevant library or visit in person - follow the family year by year after 1901 looking for new entries at the adress etc. |
