Did I just read it right that if there are no records for the person you are searching for it would be because they have not claimed them, I dont understand that, or have I read it wrong thanks . Might be off now to watch Strictly Dance Fever its the final back later thanks

I think nearly everyone involved in WW1 has a record in the medal index even if its a negative, but to be on the safe side check this site out, go to forum and pose question on relavent thread :- http://1914-1918invisionzone.com/forums. thier're a clever bunch of chaps and will answer any questions specially for beginner's in this field Len

thanks Len for that info, it does say on Nationalarchives if you cannot find a name it could be because nobody has ever claimed the medals, which I thought was funny.

Hi Val My grandfather was killed in WW1 in Ypres 1917. His medals were sent to my grandmother after the war along with the 'Dead Man's Penny'. The medals are with me now, along with the relevant ribbons which are in pristine condition. My Dad served with the Royal Artillery in WW2, and I know that the medals for that war had to be claimed. He never did send for his. I know he was proud to have served, but felt that he shouldn't have to claim what was rightfully his. I haven't seen what you are referring to on the NA site. Pauline

Am adding to this thread to remind me to look tomorrow......My hubby's grandfather was only awarded one medal in WW1, but had it withdrawn!! I have his medal record sheet here, and will look to see if it's on TNA's list (we got it years ago). From what you say (Val) it shouldn't be there....... Merry

hello again I was looking up someones dad on here for that William Terry the one who served in Davenport but when I did not find him went to read the info about the war stuff and that is what it said, I must say I was surprised because I thought it listed all the ones which had been awarded not just the claimed ones, maybe the government was trying to save money and waited for people to claim them rather than informing them they had one , are you sure Tony Blair isnt re-incarnated

Q. My relative was an officer. Why can I not find his medal entitlement? A. Unlike medals for soldiers, which were sent automatically, officers had to apply for their campaign medals. If they did not apply, there will not be a card Denis

probably stating the obvious here, but are you sure he served in the war? I have very few rellies who did - they were all in reserved occupations.
