Hello everyone,I have just found out that my grandfather served in the Royal Navy in 1909.All I know is that he was stationed in the barracks at Devon port and he was a stoker on a steam ship.Has anyone any ideas on how I can find out more infomation ? Are there any records I can search to try to find his regiment with only knowing his name and job? Any help or ideas would be gratefully appreciated,Cheers Kath If anyone would like a go at finding him here is the info I have ;- WILLIM TERRY B1890 4TH APRIL at HEAP BRIDGE HEYWOOD. He married in 1909 and on his marriage certificate it says ;- Residence ROYAL NAVEL BARRACKS DEVONPORT proffession STOKER ON STEAM SHIP R.N. He married again in 1919 but it does not say he was in the navy all it says is that he was a firebeater and I have always thought this was at an iron foundry. Gratewful for any help or suggestions, thank you,Kath

Try checking the National Archives for his service records: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/search/quick_search.aspx Suzanne Quote from National Archives site 'Royal Naval Seamen (1873 - 1923) You can now search and download the service registers of more than 500,000 seamen who joined the Royal Navy between 1873 and 1923 online.'

being ex navy myself, i suguest trying devonport it self first. no such thing as regiments in navy, granddad would have been in a division whilst in dock, then the ships name would be all u need while at sea HMS something?? try goggle royal navy and see what happens, not sure what national archives would give, military records are hard at the best of times. good luck if really stuck try mod, whitehall, london. they hold all service records.

I had a look on Nationalarchives but it seems the Seamen medals are only from the second world war, not the first as I thought sorry, Have you got his marriage cert because on a few of mine it has the persons rank and number at the time of marriage
