Marriage cert arrived three days early BUT father's Christian name not what I'd expected! It's shown on the cert as Denis, but I'm pretty sure I've got the family on the census in 1871 and '81 showing him as Thomas. I know I'll have to order one of their children's birth certs to double check, but I'm impatient! Has anyone come across this before? Lizzie

Yes, I have a case like this myself. One of my Grt grt grandfather's daughters put his name as William Henry Sanger when in fact his name was William Thomas Sanger. I know it's only the middle name she got wrong but it threw me at first because I thought I'd ordered the wrong cert. It was only the fact that the address was where she grew up that I knew it definitely was the right one!

Hi Lizzie, Yes I've got this on my MIL's certificates. On birth certificate her father is listed as Walter Albert Trowbridge but on her marriage cert. he is listed as William Albert Trowbridge. According to the census Walter is the correct one and I also have his birth and marriage cert. and it's Walter on all of them with the right mother Linda

Thanks for that. I'm convinced it is him, it's just a strange thing to happen. Maybe the excitement of the moment got to her!! Shall tentatively add him to the tree. Lizzie

Have you actually looked at the census image to make sure it has not been mistranscribed. Alternatively maybe the vicar misheard the name for the wedding. I don't think Denis was a very common victorian name I think I would go with Thomas.

My folk are ok, but husband has a gt great grandfather whose dad is Solomon on birth cert and Zalig on wedding cert. He also has a chap who is Dennis McCarthy on his own marriage cert and his son's birth cert, but becomes James Carter on son's marriage cert and on censuses! Definitely the same chap. nell

Hi Annie and Helen Definitely Thomas on the census images. The family were Irish so maybe the accent got in the way at the wedding! Lizzie

The surname of the bride is wrong on my Grandparents' marriage cert - McDonald, instead of McDonough. That makes it even worse if you need to search the GRO index! Jay

Not at all unusual. My step-father-in-law is Charles Henry on his birth certificate, but he married as Charles Edward, he even signed as witness at my marriage as Charles Edward. I have another birth certificate for a William Herbert, but marriage certificate and sons birth certificate show William Henry, there is absolutely no doubt that they are the same people. Thes are just two examples, I could quote more. Jennifer
