Merry Report 1 Jun 2006 19:43

I wasn't convinced that it did say grocer, though that's the only think that fits! Two jobs? Well, I suppose his wife might have been running a shop whilst he was down the pit......but it was entered as his occupation as the shop belonged to him! Merry

Two oddly assorted jobs is entirely possible. One of mine, who was presumably short of money after her husband died leaving her with half a dozen children, was a butcher and summerhouse builder. She eventually gave it up as a bad job and emigrated to Australia.

The enumerator originally wrote 'collier and grocer' for William. At a later stage, someone has added, in different handwriting, 'coal m' (alongside his name) and 'grocer' (alongside his wife's name).
