I've been in Lincolnshire archives today searching all over the place for one girls baptism. I have her marriage on the 2nd May 1811, but couldn;t find her baptism. Then when I;ve got home, I've found this:

MARY BRATLEY Female -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Event(s): Birth: Christening: Death: Burial: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Other Event(s): Adult Christening: 10 MAR 1811 Alvingham, Lincoln, England -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Messages: Extracted birth or christening record for the locality listed in the record. The source records are usually arranged chronologically by the birth or christening date But no parents - where could I go from here? Thanks,

I'd try to get a copy of that original. You can't tell what hasn't been transcribed. Christine

I think I'll have to and keep my fingers crossed that they haven't transcribed it properly. There is another Adult female baptism for Susanna Bratley a bit later that year so will have to check that one too.

Tom These look like christenings before marriage - but I wonder why? Elly

My guess is that they were either: a) not from the area, and were gypsies so were never christened, or the family didn;t believe in God, but when she wanted to get married the vicar said to her that she had to be baptised first - very annoying though - another dead end. :-(

What about 1841 census? Is the place of birth the same as the marriage/christening? Elly

There is nothing on the IGI for Marsh Chapel so guess I am going to have to go back to Lincoln to check,

Anne Report 31 May 2006 22:33

My great grandmother was baptised as an adult in 1850s. I think her family were baptists who went in for adult baptisms - although she was baptised in the Wesleyan Methodist church and a couple of years later married my g grandfather who was a methodist. The IGI extraction does name her parents though. It would definately be worth checking the actual record. Anne

Anne - unless I'm missing something it doesn't name her parents - or is there another one I haven't seen?

Anne

Sorry Tom - I wasn't making myself clear. I meant my great gran's parents were named on the IGI, even though she no longer lived with them. Perhaps the actual record will name yours. Hope so, it would be a b-- to go back to Lincoln and find it didn't. Anne

Hi Elly, thanks for that but I don;t think they are - My Mary Bratley married in 1811 and according to that she would have only been about 10.

yes, your right - I think I was hoping the ages are wrong Oh well back to the drawing board (or Lincoln!) Elly
