My 3x great grandfather alfred burton b1853 in Great Amwell Herts and his son Charles b1887 ran a photography business from Roman Street hoddesdon herts. There is a book called Hoddesdons past in pictures which actually lists him and his son running this business. After Alfreds death his son charles took over and continued to run this business until it closed in about 1950. Does anyone know how I can find more information about this other than the book I have already? Thanks

I suspect that you might need to contact HALS the Hertfordshire Archives & Local Studies service. nell

You could check the old Hertfordshire street directories and the like for his business, which should at least give you the address and covering years of operation (Kelly's, Slater's - probably at Herts. Record Office or a really big library). If you're really lucky he might have paid for an advert in one of the yearly directories to advertise himself which may give a bit more info on the business, prices, etc., especially if he was a photographer and dealt with the public. Hoddesdon library (if there is such a place, or the nearest town with a library) should also have a small local studies collection with any books written of local interest by local historians which might prove useful for a general history and overview of the area, and again, they might also have old postcards or newspaper cuttings from the area. In each case though, you need to be in Hertfordshire getting your feet in on the ground. This is not the kind of thing that can be done online.

Or the local press for the area, they may have some old pics that were taken and infortmation in their archives as would no doubt the library. It is possible that there was some freelance photography done which would be helpful. Lyn
