Watch out on FTM 06

If you have a date with c before it e.g 'c1871' - the programme does not notice if you make a mistake. It only notices if there is no c before the number. I know the idea is not to make mistakes but with so many names all the same etc, it's easy done. Just thought I would mention it!!

Heather Report 31 May 2006 15:49

It always changes mine to 'abt' if I try to put a c in front.

Abt. is the correct gedcom format, some program will not recognise c. If you try and import a gedcom into FTM from another program and there is a c. before the date FTM will ignore the whole date during import because it does not recognise the c.. Ron www.genealogyprinters*com

You can change the Abt. to a 'c' if you prefer that. Having said that I should tell you how to do it - but am working on hubbies computer at the moment as mine is being repaired. If I remember rightly you go to Preferences - then date - and where it says Abt. you just overwrite it with 'c' -- but having just read Ron´s comment it is probably best to leave it as Abt !

Sorry for delay in replying - not had time to get on PC recently. Thanks for replies. However, just wanted to point out that you have all misunderstood what I meant so I guess I wasn't clear. Will try again here:- If you enter a date for Mum's birth - say 1853 and then a birth for a child 1862 - obviously that can't be right as Mum wasn't even 10 years old - and it will come up with a notice to tell you that you have made a mistake and to check it. HOWEVER, if you are not sure of the exact birth date and have put Mum as born in c1853 and then child as c1862 - It doesn't notice that it's not possible - the c at the beginning throws the system out. Hope that makes more sense!!

I dont see that with FTM 2006 First of all if I type c, then the system changes it to abt. which is the way I have defaults set, so the two are one and the same. I cant speak for imports though haveing not tested it. Secondly if either or both the mother and child have abt before the date, then the warning message still pops up, if the mother is older than 50, or younger than 13.

Andrea - that must be a bug in FTM06. I'm using FTM v11 (an older version) and get the expected error message whenever the child's birth is less than 13 years after the parents - irrespective of whether the dates are known or approximate (i.e. with or without the c.)

Heather

Cant be a bug Richard, as mine works fine, if I put a c it immediately changes it to abt and will give the error re dodgey dates. As Ron said, perhaps its down to importing the info.

I have been trying to master Ftm6 however I entered one relative twice as Lucy and Lucella with a different date of birth. I keep getting the message you can't delete a relative by putting in blanks but how do I get rid of her. In simple language please.

Heather Report 6 Jun 2006 11:33

To delete a person go to that persons name in her little box click next to it so your cursor is there, click on people at the top of the page and go down to delete individual and click.

Nope, its just a case of learning as we all go along. There must be so much on there I could do if only I knew! I still think its great we all have each other to ask these things - can you imagine sitting there with no one to ask! Actually I think I learnt that one from the Help tab thing at the top. I put in 'delete person' and it came up how to do it. Do have a go at the help thingy as even I can understand it sometimes.

Heather have you worked out how to put music on there ?????

Heather

Heather Report 6 Jun 2006 12:15

Not yet Val, I havent attempted it yet, got so much **** going on here at the mo - and then theres the counting of the FTM money and the compost bin money to do aswell. I will get round to it following your directions - and it would be fun, say to have something like Glen Miller/Vera Lynn on mum and dads info and some music hall ditties on earlier stuff and so on going backwards. Old man due home any second - better shift my large butt and get some files out to look efficient. x
