Thank you Lisa for those. I do have the death entry and the image which was kindly sent to me by another member of genes. I have also found the death for Mabel in British Columbia, this is James`s daughter from his first marriage I am not sure about the others, they may belong to our family or may not. I have no proof either way yet. The obituary I have also states that he died after an illness lasting over a year, so I assume he became ill while in Canada. Not sure, but I cant really imagine someone being very ill and travelling all that way on a steam ship. The family were definately in England in 1901 as I have them all on the UK 1901 census. The UK 1911 is not available to us until 2012. Do you have any idea when the 1921 Canada census will be released |

Hi Carol. I'm leaving for work in a few minutes, but.... I have four (or more) notices about my family. They all lived in Toronto and were originally in England. In all cases the wording was identical to yours. Obviously, it doesn't rule out that your James was in another part of Canada, but I think there might be a better possibility that they weren't. I'll try a few sites and post the results. inGeneas: http://www*ingeneas*com/ingeneas/index.html (replace * with .) Two Robt., Sarah, Wm. Ancestry has an entry for James Flew died 1921 on their 'One World Tree'. I don't have access to that; perhaps someone else does. They also have: Mabel Evelyn Flew, British Columbia Death Index, died 1937; Ontario, Canada deaths for James Flew, died 1921 - Frontenac; Ontario, Canada Deaths for Thomas Charles Flew, died 1944, military. Thomas Charles Flew, September 4, 1944, son of Thomas and Beatrice Flew, Simcoe, Ontario - found on http://www*virtualmemorial*gc*ca/ Didn't see any Flew's in Ontario in 1901 and none in 1911, but they aren't done transcribing the 1911 yet. http://automatedgenealogy*com/census/index.html (Don't believe there were any in Canada (yet) in 1911, as it usually shows the other provinces.) |

I found one of the family Gertrude FLEW aged 19 on the home children site This gave me the name of the ship, date and port of departure and date of arrival in Canada. I had assumed that Gertrude may have been just one of my family transcribed as a home child, and that the whole family travelled together (mum, dad, and 6 children) I now have the passenger list for the voyage which I obtained from National Archives, and Gertrude is the only FLEW listed My problem now is when did the rest of the family emigrate I know it was before 1914 as I have the marriage entries for Gertrude and her sister Alice. On the obituary for my g grandfather James FLEW dated 1921 are the words 'The deceased was born in England and was 65 years of age. He came to Kingston with his family 8 months ago. He was a street car conductor' The question is, did he come to Kingston from England 8 months ago or from another area of Canada. Why is that one answer leads a lot more questions. |
