Just got my copy of FTM 2005 and want to import my tree and all the extra details from GR on to it. Is this possible or do i have to start from scratch?? I hope not! Thanks, Kate |

You should be able to import it all from GR - however GR seem to be having problems with their import/export at the moment (even more reason to get it off this site and on to another program) If the GR one is working, just go to the green margin on the left hand side, scroll down to where it says Import/Export Tree and click on that link - it should then talk you through the way to do it. |

it's very simple . if you have got your FTM on your computer, (with your own name & details added) just go to export tree on GR follow the simple instructions as shown & it will send you an email with your tree gedcom on it. (it may take a short while depending on how many people you have on your GR tree, occassionaly you have to export more than once.) karenx |

Hi Katharine You should just have to click on the gedcom attachment from GR in your email, and then FTM should leap in to action as it will recognise a gedcom file. Just follow the FTM prompts after that. Good luck PP |

Siblings to grandparents?, Well you need to go to the grandparents' parents page - if you dont know their names yet just put Unknown for dad and Unknown for mum. You will then list the kids - i.e. your grand parent and his bros and sisters in the children. Oh by the way, the help tab is very good for queries - sometimes even I understand it. And when you do all the kids, click on People, sort kids and then you can put them all in the order of their births - makes it easier to look at. |

I should imagine half a tree missings a fault with GR not you. Have another go and see if it sorts itself. |

I should try GR first as when I did mine a couple of years back now, it just went all smoothly. I think GR has a lot of probs with the site, not only the gedcoms but the contacts - mine have gone missing. Try not to get too frustrated, just be pleased that when you have done it you know it wont just disappear - back it up to cd and create your family home page. |

Katherine, if you read Brians thread it looks like GR have finally fixed the importing prob so hopefully your prob will be sorted aswell. |

You were right Heather..I exported it again and like magic all the missing relatives appeared! Will the extra information for each person also be exported? I don't know where to look for it to check? Also do you update your GR tree when you have FTM? Thanks again, Kate |

Kate, most of us who use FTM keep all their information on there, as their master file. Do remember to take backups though. From ime to time (when its working, as there has been a problem recently) we upload a copy of our FTM tree onto GR. One of the advantages of this is that you can choose who you put onto GR and who is left off. |

Glad its sorted now. To check info on your FTM (do have a play with all the buttons and bits) click on the edit tab under the individual and it will bring up all your notes on that person. On mine I tend to put all the info I have about them on that page, the census info and sources and any personal knowledge about them or their lives. To add their photo click on the scrap book and then add photo, browse and click on the photo or image you want and it will come up in the box, you can then crop it, edit it, change the shading and when you are happy, click ok. Dont forget to do your home page - click on internet then create home page. It will talk you through, you should just click next a few times and away it will go. You will then be asked to design your first page - again its a matter of clicking on the background you want, text you want etc and a bit of blurb about your ancestors. Use a 'not cold' email address for contacts as that will filter all your possible contacts when your tree is found by search engines. Make sure you click on privatise living persons when you are creating the website. I dont update the GR one that often - you can just import your FTM on to it if you want, but I dont like the fact all the notes go over with it. Id do it person by person on GR if you want to update. To update your family website (they call it homepage but I think thats a misnomer, sounds like just one page, when mine is over 700 pages), just click on internet, update home page and again all your stuff goes over - you ignore the bit about making your first page when you do an update. Do back the FTM onto a cd so its safe off the puter. Just click on file, back up, back up to cd, put a cd in your coffee cup holder on your puter, click and thats it, it puts all your info onto a cd - give it a name like Family tree 1.6.06,(or whatever the date is the day you do it) so you know which version you have on the cd. |
