Can anyone give me some advise on children born to British servicemen overseas? If the child is born on Army property, is the birth registered in UK records or in the specific locale e.g. Malta, Egypt etc. Thank you. |

Gillie I don't know if times have changed. I'm looking circa 1910 and they aren't showing on the BMD records but then again it's Malta nd Egypt as opposed to mainstream Europe. Thanks for the tip though. Roy |

Thanks Porkie Pie, I'm surprised they are on 1837 but not Ancestry. I'll give it a go. |

Hi, they probably would have been registered at the embassy by the parents in order to get Bristish nationality.Though there's no obligation to do so,my three were. I'm British & my husband's French 2 sons born in France & registered at the British Embassy by us 1 daughter born in the United Arab Emirates - we registered her with the French Embassy (fees paid by my husband's company & not with the British one because it would have cost us about £300!) Hoping she'll be able to get nationality when we can afford it! Not sure if this helps, the birth is automatically registered in the place it happened but I think it's up to the parents to register it elsewhere if they want to. I would imagine that if it was a forces birth (mother married to father) then it would have been registered at the embassy by the employer (British Forces). These things are never 'free' you always have to pay. Sarah :-) |

Porkie Pie Thanks for the tip, I've just found two births and sadly one of the childrens deaths . Sarah Thank you for that info, very useful, trust the uk to charge more for the registration than anywhere else. Regards Roy |

Hi Two of my children were born overseas whilst serving with the British army. One was born in a local hospital and one in a military hospital. The children's births need to be registered with the British Consulate to 'make them British'. Having said that I cannot find either of my two's births on the overseas register - better not lose their birth certificates!!!! Snowdrops |
