I have been told by a family member, the one of my relo's may have spent time in prison, are there any web sites available, where I can check for this?. Ben. |

If he/she was in prison during a census year that would have been recorded on the census. I think there are other records but I'm not sure exactly. |

Hi Ben, it really depends on what sort of date you're looking at, if it's in the 1800s or before that, there maybe a mention of them in Access to Archives, which you can now search through the National Archives global search function. For the 1900s, there probably won't be a mention of them on there. If you know the place of conviction or imprisonment you could contact the local county record office to see if they hold the records for that place, although there are strict closure rules on prison records. The local record office should be able to give you advice on that. There is also a Black SheepIndex website, which you can search, and order reports if your relative shows up, that address is http://www(.)lightage(.)demon(.)co(.)uk (Just remove the brackets) Best of luck with it Ben John |

Ive found one of hubbys rellies in Liverpool prison on the 1891 census but I think that is quite unusual as most institutions unfortunately seem to use just initials on the census returns. |
