Can anybody out there help found this posted on a roots web board from years ago This written by Helen Harrap in 1998 (e mail address now untraceable but she resides in Australia) My Grandfather Josiah Tiffin was born in Carlisle and travelled to South Africa in th 1880s, he seemed to be an adventurer fighting in the Matabele wars and also in the Boar War, I believe under Baden Powell. He was in the seige of Mafeking. He married in about 1901 and my father Charles Henry Ivatt Tiffin (Ivatt was his mothers maiden name) was born in Mafeling on 7/1/1902. He was one of four children. Josiah travelled to the US at some stage and spent time with his brother Cjharles whom I believe was a vet. My father was named after him. Josiah died in Tanganyeka in mid 1950s. He joined the railways in Southern Africa and was involved in building the famous bridge at Victoria Falls which spans the Zambesi river connecting Zimbabwe and Zambia. He lived most of his life in Africa. Only one of his children remain in Africa, Arhtur where he bought up his two daughters. The other three including my father made their home in Australia and remained here. The four children were bought to Australia by their mother in about 1913 - we dont know why as she had no family here. Grandfather (Josiah) eventually arrived in Australia after WW1. His youngest son went back to Africa with him and remained there. Grandmother returned to Africa many years later. We met his son and daughter in 1996. my father attended school in Bulawayo and Salisbury (Harare). We have scrapbooks and diaries of Josiahs. I am looking for a Josiah Tiffin he had a brother Charles and was last seen on the census in 1891 in Carlisle. I have sent for Charles Ivatt Tiffin birth cert from South Africa but I am not holding out much hope its been a long time since I sent for it. Need suggestions to go further - where to look etc I have searched South Africa National Archives pages cant find my Tiffins although there are others. Charles Ivatt Tiffin appears in Australian National Archives (his army records). Found Charles Tiffin brother in America he was a veterinary. Are there such things as Australian census, passenger lists he must have sailed between the two? Help would be appreciated from you international genealogists out there Sharon.

Sharon Have a look on the Australian National Archives site (www.naa.gov.au). Click on ''record search'', then ''search now as a guest''. Put ''Tiffin'' in the search box. There are 40 hits for Tiffin, including one for a Frederick Mattinson Tiffin, born Carlisle. His WW1 attestation papers are online - next of kin was Bessie Tiffin (mother). Also a Sydney Dick Tiffin, born Bulawayo South Africa in 1912. His papers are not online but you can request them from the NAA. They will digitise them and put them online for you, no charge. Also a Charles Henry Ivatt Tiffin, born 1902 place unknown, next of kin Vera Tiffin. Will have a look to see what else I can dig up... Richard
