How do I go about finding if my great great grandfather left a will please?>>>>>>>>>>>>> He had five daughters, the eldest of which was my great grandmother..>>>>>>>.she was cut off (so the family story goes?) because she apparantly married beneath her. If that were the case, this would suggest, that he intended one of his daughters to inherit.>>>>>>> However I discovered that 2 of her sisters found in the census' were working as servants in other peoples households, so don't know exactly what happened there............perhaps he or the family, considered his daughters worthless, when it came to running 155 acres of land? Or perhaps they were more interested in getting away from it?>>>>> One other sister I have not yet discovered what happened to!>>> And the youngest sister died at about 9 years old.>>>>>>>>>>> As their father was from a long line of land owning farmers, I would be interested to know, if his land went back into the family.>>>>>>>and therefore what happened to his wife (my g g grandmother? If she had survived him>>>>>.which I have not yet verified)>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> They came from Shropshire, and from what I can gather had several holdings.>>>>> Gg grandfather died in 1866.>>>>>>>> Can someone kindly point me in the right direction, so that I can fit another piece into the jigsaw?>>>>> Thankyou, Jen |

If you go to this site http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk Type in the name and press search. This will bring up all records held by national Archives in that name. If you get too many results then put name AND place in box Kat Valerie is right but my search box seems to bring up more variety of searches and is easier to use. |

I suspect the will will be from after 1858? If that is the case you need to search the nationally produced probate calendars. There has been on every year since 1858 and they are available in many large county archives. If you find he did leave a will you can buy a copy for £5 from York. If you put 'wills' into the search above the messages on here you'll get lots of threads and also the address in York. Anne |
