Can anyone help me . My daughter, english born and bred, married a gentleman who is of mixed race, His father who is still alive, but is unavailable to answer questions due to a stroke, is half west indian and half african. His mother, who died some 15 years ago was also of mixed race, half Indian and half South African. I can find a marriage between my daughters husbands father and his wife. But on Ancestry it gives a completely different name. I am told that this could be the Indian name and she would also have had a 'family name'. Can anyone tell me ... when this lady died would she have used the surname of her husband. Her original maiden name.. or another variation of her maiden name. As I am unable to trace here death on Ancestry although it is afetr 1984 and the full data is indexed and available to view. Any ideas. Regards Brian

Don't know about different cultures, but people could and can use any name they choose, so if you can't find the record with the name you are looking for its worth trying others. nell

Nell. Thanks for you comment but I have already tried all of the combinations of name I can think of. I was wondering if some cultures change the endings of names etc. Brian

Ancestry is jamming on me, so I can't check, but I found this by googling: 'Most Sikh names apply equally to men and women, the distinguishing feature is 'Singh' after a mans first name and 'Kaur' after a woman's. Traditional Sikh names normally end in the suffix - inder , as in Rajinder, Jatinder and Sukhinder. - pal , as in Kirnpal, Pritpal and Rajpal. - deep , as in Kirndeep, Jasdeep and Mandeep. - preet , as in Harpreet, Jaspreet and Sukhpreet.
