Hi, I was wondering if someone could have a look on their certs and see if the registrar or supt. registrar was John Davenport. He was working at the Ashby de la zouch RO between 1851 and 1871. Thanks. Tom |

Greeting’s Tom….. Although I don’t have any certificates to check…. But I can confirm that on the 1841. Census returns for District 2….. Ashby De la Zouch. On the cover page. There is his signature John Davenport as Supt. Registrar. I also noticed that on the 1861. Census returns for District No. 6. Ashby De la Zouch. The Enumerator was a Thomas Davenport. 1851. Census returns HO 107 / 2084. / 615.. / page. 16. Coleorton Moor. John Davenport. 40. REGISTRAR. b Ashby De La Zouch. Sarah Ann. Wife. 40. b Coleorton. Thomas Son. 12. Scholar. b Ashby De La Zouch. William Son. 11. Ditto. b Ditto. Ann. Dau. 10. Ditto b Coleorton. Joseph. Son. 6. Ditto. b Ditto. John. Son. 4. Ditto. b Ditto. Theresa. Dau. 1. b Ditto. Plus two Servants within the Household. In 1841 John was down as a Dealer in Coleorton. I wonder if this was his Father in Ashby De La Zouch :- 1841. Census Returns. HO 594. Book No. 2. Folder. 5. Page. 2. Ashby De La Zouch. Wood Street. John Davenport. 55. Clark to the Parish Union. Eleanor Wife. 60. Both Born within the County. Hope this is of help to you…… MIKE. |

It was normal in the early days for the Clerk to the Guardians to double up as Superintendent Registrar, so presumably it was John Snr who signed off the 1841 census books. Superintendent registrars did weddings, but they didn't sign birth and death registers unless there was some sort of problem. Each sub-district had a Registrar of Births and Deaths, whose signature normally appears on birth and death certs. So for John Snr you'd be looking for a civil marriage cert really, but they were still quite rare. |

Hi, Thanks for that - I am waiting for John Jnr's marriage cert to come in the post and hopefully that will say that the elder John is the Father. I have found all of these references in the directories of John Davenport (snr. address given on census) who was union clerk, director to the board of guardians and supt. registrar so hopefully *fingers crossed* they will turn out to be father and son. Thanks |

Hi Tom, I have a marriage cert which is dated 1852 which took place in Appleby in the Registration District of Ashby de la Zouch. Unfortunately for you, it only has the Rector's name, and no sign of the Registrar. Sorry I can't be more helpful. Kind regards, Chris |
