My mother in laws father was John Michael Tynan,when he got married in 1920, But on my mother in laws birth cert in 1926 he is Michael John Tynan. any ideas ? Apart from working for the post office and living in Lambeth I have nothing to go on |

I'm afraid that people just did swap their names around. Sometimes they added to them or took bits away, or changed the spelling. It might have been for all sorts of reasons. My Grandmother was birth-registered Alice, but opted for Harris sometimes (e.g. 1901 census - and, No, that wasn't a mistranscription!), and decided to add Roma as a first name by the time of her death. Possibly he was named after his father and known by his 2nd name to avoid confusion, but reverted to first name when his father died. Or the person recording the information just put the names in the wrong order. Remember Diana took 'Phillip Charles Arthur George' to be her husband and not 'Charles Phillip'. nell |
