Could someone please tell me what the vol. page means when you look up dates on ancestry, and are they useful???? Thankyou

Kelly the Volume & page numbers refer to which book that particular BMD is on. If you wanted to order a certificate & you quote these numbers it will only cost £7 if you dont have these numbers the certificate will cost you £11. Georgina.

Kelly you can go to this site and order online or you can google the local registry office where the event took place... http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ Georgina.

Two alternatives to bear in mind - they may be useful... 1] Local ROs have the same info - one transcription earlier. The GRO records are the result of quarterly harvesting of the local records - ever an opportunity for error and omission. Some Local ROs have their own (searchable) transcription websites - try www.ukbmd.org.uk for a list of them. Fees are the same as from GRO. BUT - Some local offices are extremely unhelpful if the cert is for genealogy. 2] If you can find out at which church a marrage took place (assuming it was at a church) - and this info can often be on the Local RO sites - you might be able to get a copy of the Parish Register page from a Local Studies Centre (County Records Office, Large Library, Local Museum...) instead. That would be the ultimate primary source: the original source for all the cert/index info. You get to see the original handwritten signatures (or Xs) of the parties to the event. It can cost significantly less than a cert. Christine

Volume numbers are assigned to specific areas which can help if you are looking for an event in a region but aren't sure which registration district it would be in. For example 4b is Norfolk and bits of Suffolk, 6a is Gloucestershire and other parts of the west country. 1 is London and is a, b, or c depending on which bit. Information on registration districts, which gives volume numbers, here: www.fhsc.org.uk/genuki/reg/
