I have my GG gran marriage and death certificate showing her mother was Mary Gardiner and father was Robert Sutherland, however they weren't married. Mary Gardiner is suppossed to have married James Taylor in 1824 who then deserted her, but i can find no record to confirm this as it was before 1855. On the 1841 census Mary is recorded as Mary Gardiner not Taylor, i cant find any of the family on the 1851 census. I have my GG gran marriage cert from 1857 and Mary Gardiner is not recorded as deceased therefore if she must have died after 1857. My problem is would the death be registered as Mary Gardiner or would it have to been recorded as Taylor ? I am assuming she never remarried of course. Thankyou in advance to anyone who can help or give me advice on this matter. Debbie

hiya, it seems to me that mary may never have married!!, sometimes when people have parents on a marriage cert they couild already be dead, I know this doesnt help matters much, (its just what i think) were there ANY other children??? julie

Hi Debbie OOPS!!! Need a coffee!!! How are you ? Will try that again...LOL IMHO if Marys name was given as Gardiner on (I take it to be her daughter) her daughters MC in 1857 it looks like Mary has reverted to her Maiden name. Searched SP - no Mary Gardiner with other surname Taylor Jan x

Hi Debbie.... Did a check of old parish records for marriage between James Taylor and Mary Gardiner between 1823 and 1841 and there wasnt one. Even checked with the spelling Gardner and still nothing. On the offchance I checked for Marriage between Robert Sutherland and a Gardiner and found a Babara Gardiner marrying a Robert Sutherland 10/09/1829. Then I checked deaths for a Mary Gardner (without the I as Jan had already checked that) and found 5 between 1857 and 1955. Reason I was checking the without the I is because I have Gardners in my tree that sometimes end up with an I stuck in there somewhere so guess it works both ways. Shaz x

Hi Julie There was one other daughter named Elizabeth Sutherland born Nov 1834. My GG Gran is Jane Sutherland born March 1837. Neither are in the IGI i dont think they were baptised because they were illegitimate. Elizabeth Sutherland is witness at her sisters wedding in 1857 but other than that and the 1841 census i can find no trace of her either. Debbie

Hi Jan Nice to speak to you again, thanks for that look-up. I am pretty sure Mary reverted back to her maiden name, she uses her maiden name Gardiner when being 'interrogated' on the parentage of her children when called before church elders. I think Mary would have been born about 1807, and lied slighty about her age on the 1841 census. Debbie

Hi Shaz Thanks for looking those up for me. Mary Gardiner never married Robert Sutherland, seems as though they lived together as husband and wife but he played away and then married the other girl. Robert Sutherland married Catherine Anderson in Oct 1837, when my GG gran was 7 months old, and Catherine had a son in Dec 1837. Thanks again Debbie

A big thankyou to Julie, Jan and Shaz. Just wanted to let you know that i have now found my GGG gran Mary Gardiner death certificate. So i can now add another branch to this line. She died in 1881 and death was registered as Mary Taylor maiden name Gardner. Thanks again Debbie
