I have only recently found any details of my dad Victor Harold Heather Cross because he divorced my mother when I was only small (1940's). I thought he lived in Scarborough or at least his family did at that time. Turns out he was born in Guildford, found his father's name (my grandfather) Thomas William (or William Thomas) and his mother (my grandmother) Edith Heather married in Aldershot Barracks in 1913. Got Thomas's dad's name William (a gunmaker) but can't get back any further - Help please. |

Have you got Thomas and Edith's marriage cert? This will tell you how old they were when they married so you should be able to find a birth for them. Then you can send for the birth certificates and get full details of both sets of parents. Sam x |

No, Im confused here, dads surname is Cross? But your grandads surname is Williams? Ah, you mean grandad is William or Thomas Cross, yes? You need to get your grandparents marriage certificate which will give you both fathers names and occupations - that should take you back before 1901 and then you can trace them through the census records, buying birth and marriage certificates on the way. |

If you know that the father was a gunsmith, Im assuming you have bought their marriage cert or where did you get that info from? I thought Edith Heather was an unusual name, but theres lots! Have you got her dads name from the certificate? |

Assuming Edith was also in Guildford at the time, this is a good possible for her lot in 1901: Really we need an age for the husband as there are dozens of Crosses but none born Guildford as I can see so far. Do you have a year of birth for him? Arthur Heather abt 1882 Guildford, Surrey, England Son Stoke Within Surrey C Heather abt 1859 Aldershot, Hampshire, England Wife Stoke Within Surrey Daisy Heather abt 1900 Guildford, Surrey, England Daughter Stoke Within Surrey >>>>>Edith Heather abt 1888 Guildford, Surrey, England Daughter Stoke Within Surrey Fred Heather abt 1882 Guildford, Surrey, England Son Stoke Within Surrey Harold Heather abt 1897 Guildford, Surrey, England Son Stoke Within Surrey Harry Heather abt 1886 Guildford, Surrey, England Son Stoke Within Surrey Henry W Heather abt 1852 Guildford, Surrey, England Head Stoke Within Surrey Lily Heather abt 1895 Guildford, Surrey, England Daughter Stoke Within Surrey And assuming Farnham connection aswell: 1901: Thomas Cross abt 1888 Farnham, Surrey, England Brother-in-law Bournemouth Hampshire Emily Riley abt 1878 Farnham, Surrey, England Wife Bournemouth Hampshire John L Riley abt 1868 Liverpool, Lancashire, England Head Bournemouth Hampshire Margaret H Riley abt 1899 Bournemouth, Hampshire, England Daughter Bournemouth Hampshire Was hoping to find him on the 1891 but cant see him as yet - was his father in the army too, as a gun smith? May be they were in Ireland for the 1891. |
