I am over the moon, I have found a Fanny. She is from Wednesbury and was born in 1791. I have only had the 'nice' names so far, Sarah, William, Thomas, Mary.... BUT to have a Fanny, my kids will be thrilled when I tell them. ( I think they will really die of laughing) Kathlyn

I have lots of Fannys too. One of them is Fanny Finney!!! How could anyone do that to a child?

I am sure that some time ago this question was answered....What is Fanny short for???? Can you imagine pushing your baby out in his/her buggy and a neighbour stops you, looks at the beautiful child sound asleep, and askes you...'So, what did you decide to call the little darling???? Fanny says the proud mum!!!!!!! I think that parents who give their children 'bad' names should be hung, drawn and quartered, preferably in public!!!! Kathlyn

Sarah

Fanny is short for Francis though it's also a name in it's own right Sarah :-) (who doesn't have any Fannys - not even a dead one!)

Its actually a name in its own right. I think probably because it was such a popular name for girls, that the connotation we have for it now came about. Bit like Shiela in Aus just meaning a girl. Fanny in England came to mean a girl (and a bit more intimately!) My mum always used to call me Fanny Ann when she was trying to get my attention.
