Re Alfred James born Leicester c1862. I am looking for details to order his death certificate. He was alive in 1903, and was dead by (at the very latest) 1928. He died in Lambeth, London. I know that is a long stretch of time, but I have searched on Ancestry, every quarter, every year between these two dates without any luck. I know the man died - but when? I would be so pleased if anyone couls find details. TGx

Hi Merry, He was my g.granddad and he committed suicide in the family home. Poor man was ill and in such bad pain that he could not go on. You find out some sad things sometimes don't you. TGx

Hi Val, Yes this could well be him. But if he died at home in Walworth, Lambeth in London, why would he be registered in Holborn? TGx

Val wish I'd never started Report 29 May 2006 22:46

no idea maybe if it was a suicide there was an inquest elsewhere or something, I am not hot on areas I am afraid but I am sure someone else will be. I could not find any others that died in the years between 1903 and 1924 that were born about the right time

Thanks for your help Val. Maybe Holborn was the nearest place that an inquest could take place. I still dont know how I missed it. I worked back from 1928, maybe I was just tired and didn't see it. Thanks again. TGx

Isn't Walworth part of Newington rather than Lambeth?????? Newington St. Mary LND 1837-1869 Newington 1870-1901 St. Saviour Southwark 1902- Southwark Apologies if that's wrong! Merry

There would certainly have been an inquest if he committed suicide, but the death should still have been registered in the district where he died. Is it possible that they took him to a hospital in the Holborn district and that he actually died at the hospital, perhaps? Kate.

I looked on Family Relatives for Southwark 1902 - 1920 (as it's transcribed for those years, which saves doing Q by Q!!) There were four Alfred James who were registered for death, but one was a baby and the other three were years older than your chap would have been. Merry

Hi Kate, You may be right - more than a 100 years ago now, so no-one to verify. Still I will order the cert and confirm that it was him, poor man. Thanks for your help. TGx

I could not find my gt. gdf death for years as he lived in Poplar, East London, years later some memorial cards turned up in my Uncles belonging and it showed his date of death and I was able to order his death certificate from Folkstone - he was in a convalescent home. I would never have thought to find him there. Who knows what went on years ago. Good luck Irene
