My great great grandad James Lever is listed on the censuses as being born newfoundland at sea in 1855 where would i find his birth certificate

Hi Carol, familyrelatives.org (add the www. bit at the front) has the indexes to births, deaths and marriages at sea and overseas, which you can search free, you just have to register first. I've checked in the GRO marine births index, and there isn't a James Lever registered at the right time you're looking for, sorry.

because of the scetchyness of the rules surrounding BMD registration, alot og people thought it was optional and that baptisu was a valid alturnative. The law was tightend in 1874 making it compulsary to register all bmd's so you little man may never have been registered.

If you haven't found him in the marine register then another place to look would be the'' Archive of Indexes to Births, Marriages and Deaths at Sea (1854-1890)'' on 1837online - click on ''new records'' once you've logged in to 1837online. Richard
