Hi, scuse the ignorance but...... i My grandmother was alledgedly born in on 24 may 1900, the 1901 census has her as 10m old which seems to confirm this but - her birth certificate doesnt exist - it seems as though she was perhaps never registered could that be the case as I rmember her getting a pension and so wouldnt you have to have proof of birth for that? So what do I do now? Its not important in the scheme of things as I know who her parents were - its just bugging me that i cant find it!! and ii. How do you get death certs for those killed overseas in the 1st world war? Thank you in anticipation |

If you post more details someone will look for the birth registration. Have you found the Common wealth grave commission site (google CWGC). You can search for first world war casualties and print a certificate showing the cenetery where they were buried? |

thanks - i found her too but i have no evidence that shes a relation 'Ledson' is not a family name nor rochdale a place associated with our family. I'll keep trying but it seems odd that her other siblings were registered. Any suggestions as to the death certs ? |

Hi Jennifer I looked up Charlotte Greenwood in 1901, the head is Thomas but his wife is Edith, yet you say her mother was Annie, am I looking at the right family? Sam |

Thank you - I have their date of deaths 1914 and 1918 but i dont know if they had to be registered at home by their family or if the army registered them or if they were registered at all. And if they were registered then surely that date would not correspond with their date of death anyway. Has anyone else encountered this problem ( I am sure many of you have) - is there a general rule such as their regiment registered them perhaps and where would i find any info? - sorry to be a pain! Cheers again |

Oh my goodness - you are absolutely right of course - I am tracing eight families all with similar names and i got mixed up - what a fool!!! Serves me right for thinking i could remember them all in my head! But i still need advice about tracing charlottes birth registration honest! so any ideas? wasnt it a criminal offence not to register your children? Thanks in embarrassment jen |

This must be their marriage Marriages Mar 1882 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Briggs Edith Warrington 8c 172 Greenwood Thomas Warrington 8c 172 ____________________________________________________ In answer to your question about Charlotte's birth, I have one in my tree B1897 but I can find no trace of her birth reg, she died in 1905 aged 8yrs, I have that cert, but no birth..isn't it annoying!!! It became a legal requirement to register a birth from 1875 I believe, but many still went unregistered. |

The Rochdale birth with the middle name is represented on the census independently of your Charlotte. Merry |

It might just be that the birth reg has not made it through to the GRO indexes. You could try applying to Prescot Registrars. Merry |

Thank you - Yes that is their marriage and it was very kind of you too confirm that for me so thanks. I'm glad too that i can eliminate Charlotte Ledson Gwd. from my searches - I never thought about looking her up independantly of my own Charlotte. I haven't applied to the Prescot registrars myself as my Mum said she did it in the early 80's - pre computers! and didnt have any success then, but you are right, i think i will try again as i dont know if they would have liased with the other registrars in the area ( Halton/Warrington) as they do now. And failing all that at least I know that I'm not alone with the frustration of non existant registrations!! Thanks again. Any ideas re the killed in action death certs or am i being greedy? |

I though that was what the Overseas section of 1837 was for, searching for death records of those that died in the war and obtaining a certificate, am I wrong? My great grandfather is there, he died 1916 in France, I do not have any credits at the mo but I thought I could get a ref and order the cert if I wanted to |
