Can anyone help me. I have come up against a brick wall. My dad was born in India in 1939 to a british nurse and a member of the RAF (we believe). They were not married and my dad was brought to England by a nun and then adopted a year later. The convent that the nun resided (we are not sure if my dad was kept there or not) has since become a conference centre Because they were not married the government overseas department dont have records. We only have a letter from the nun and an adoption certificate - does anyone know where I would go from here to try and trace a birth certificate. Thanks for your help Christine and Anne, but unfortunately I do not have a surname (except my fathers adopted surname) and of course on 1837online you need the surname. Any other ideas ?? |

If the mother was a bBritish nurse, I can't see why the birth shouldn't have been registered as an overseas birth. Christine |

The pre adoption surname will be on the adoption records. The only person who can apply is the adopted person. You could try www.adoptionsearchreunion.org The site tells you about recent changes in legislation, but they don't strictly apply in your circumstances. The adoption register wouldn't help either.
