I think you will need to send their death certs and proof that you are the next of kin, I think you can now download navy records? use this link to search, http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/search/quick_search.aspx?javascriptenabled=True&searchtext= Roy

Yes i do? this is from a post on another (mandy in somerset) thread about navy records, I followed the link and was really pleased to find that there was a document for my granddad after all – yippee, I’d found his medal card! Paid my £3.50 straight away, downloaded the document, and it’s only his WHOLE RN SERVICE RECORD! I’m over the moon and just rang my Dad in the middle of his tea to tell him the good news. the link that mandy is talking about is the one in my first post. Roy

If you phone the MOD, they will send you an information pack which includes advice of exactly what you need to send off. You need a death cert for the person concerned but they don't ask for proof that you are next of kin, you just have to sign to say you are. 2/3rds of ww1 records were destroyed in a fire in ww2 but I believe that the remaining records are at the national archives, Roy

Val, Have just received my dad's service records from Glasgow. In the pack they send you it tells you that it could be 6-8 months before you receive them. I then got a letter after returning the search form, kinship form and a photocopy of my dad's death cert. along with a £30 cheque, to say that it could take longer than the 6-8 months. Lo and behold I got them on Friday after a total of three weeks. Anne

Hi everyone, how does one apply for their own records then if they are still alive. Both my father & father-in-law are very much living (85yrs). How do you prove you are still alive. Thanks Hilary.
