I've found a prisoner in my tree!! Can anyone kindly advise if there is a way of finding out his crime? - It would have been in the Northamptonshire area around 1850. Many thanks Gill

Local newspapers might report it, depending on what the crime was. Prison register will have details of admittance, crime, trial, description of prisoner etc. This should be in the county records office. nell

Try the Prison Service Museum which has recently moved from Newbold Revell in Warwickshire. You can get the new address from Prison Service HQ at Abel House which is in Central London

I've also got a prisoner who was in prison in 1891 in the St Giles district of Northampton. I'm planning a visit to Northampton Records Office tomorrow (Wednesday) so if you want to give me the details I can keep an eye open for your prisoner at the same time. The Records Office will do a search for you, but obviously it costs, so I thought I'd have a look myself first and if no joy I'll ask them to search.. Maureen

Hi, have you tried www*a2a*org*uk Access to Archives. You can do a name search & look to see if it brings anything up in the area you are looking for. Often brings up court details. Will also tell you which record office is holding what. Also give you a ref. no etc. Good luck. Hilary.
