Thinking of giving up...

Thinking of giving up... Report 28 May 2006 21:23

Trying to trace my uncle who was born in Devon in the thirties. Long story, but basically my dad was born in 1935 in London and given up for fostering, his mum was pregnant again at the start of WWII and evacuated to Devon. I finally found the half brother only to discover.... he moved to.... only a few miles from where I live now (in Kent). My search has taken me from Wales to London, London to Devon and finally Devon to Kent, when I only needed to look a few miles away... Has this happened to anyone else? S

Yep! Found my birth grandmother is buried about 6miles away from where I live and my Mum was brought up, but Mum was born miles away! Strange but nice now as we can visit the grave. Claire

When I was having trouble finding information about my brickwall ancestor (on my dad's side), my mum reminded me that one of her cousin's lived in England and perhaps he could help. Mum asked where I was looking and I looked at the map and told her the name of a nearby town. Turns out her cousin lives there and he not only was happy to help, he was the reason I found out so much about my dad's side! Out of all of the places to live in England, he lives within 10 miles of my 'most treasured' ancestors!

I have found that a colleague at work lived in Fetter Lane, off Fleet Street in the 1840s at number 19 Rolls Buildings when my ancestor ran a dairy business at number 20! Not only that but the ancestors of two colleagues were next door neighbours in Romsey, Hants over 100 years ago - we work in Richmond Surrey and none of us had any prior connection.
