Commifs n (superscript) = Commission Merry

A commission agent wasn't necessarily a bookmaker, Jacqui, just anyone who sold goods on commission - a sales rep.

I think it is, Roy. You can see commi, than that old-fashioned double s, and then a superscript n that stands for 'ion'.

Commission agent was a common occupation, but that is not what it says on the image, Roy

Commission Agent looks possible. Just had a google and apparently that's what they used to call a bookmaker (in the gambling sense of the word). Hmm...seems an unlikely job for someone about to embark on a career in the police!

Commission agent.

Thanks for your ideas everyone. Looking at the other occupations in the building doesn't give many clues either..they seem an odd bunch!

Can anyone read the occupation for John Brown b.1816 on the 1841 census? Details are H0107/1053/8. Folio 35. Page 13. Line no.3. I know my John Brown was in the police from at least 1847 onwards. Also most people in the building seem to be unrelated....it doesn't appear to be an instituion of any sort so what other kind of home could it be?
